Procrastinatory occurrences despite imminent deadline…

Any one else know that Pressure?

Come on, you know! The Pressure!

I guarantee that there will be two groups of people out there….

We’ve got ‘Type 1’, those who get work done before deadlines, studying hard to ensure a lack of stressful and frantic behaviour on the days approaching said deadline. That is one type of person…a type of person I can firmly assure you that I am not!

Now, we move to ‘Type 2’…this type of person requires what I can only describe as a distinct sense of academic urgency. If you’re reading this when you should doing your work then congratulations you’re type two!

Anyway, for some strange reason it is an absolute and utter necessity to have this pressure. A sense of urgency that the many previous months/weeks/days, since being given the assignment, simply did not possess!

I know I’m not the only person who thinks this or who also happens to feel this bizarre sensation forcing itself upon their fragile and easily distracted minds!

Funny thing is, why do you think I’m writing this?

Obviously, its 1:54am. I’ve a poxy 2000 word reflection in for tomorrow at 9am, a reflection of a marketing campaign based on feedback from an industry ‘expert’.

Doesn’t sound too hard? Well…true to form…we received feedback from the university a day or two before the deadline…which thus ruled out getting it done early (not that it would have anyway).

Anyway, we finally received this feedback only to find that low and behold, it literally consisted of generic presentation comments eg: “Confident speaking, good research and background analysis, structured presentation”

FANTASTIC!

So, here we are, procrastinating as usual! I’m 400 words in with pretty much everything I have to say already written down and i’m still not really feeling ‘That Pressure’!

Maybe I’m broken…academically speaking at least!

Its going to be a long night!

Christmassy Wishes To Ye All & Sundry…

Well that is that.

Another Christmas rockets by in what has apparently been the blink of an eye. Honestly I’ve no idea where the time goes these days, perhaps it has something to do with THIS…just a thought.

Having said all that it is definitely not so much a time of gifts for me these days and its becoming more and more apparent with age that, it is more so a time of family…though that said, I do rather enjoy getting gifts from family…what a combination.

Anyway, I hope you all had a most delightful Christmas and caught up with the Fam.

Failing all of that, just remember that its all a bunch of materialistic conditioning delivered to us via commercialised nonsense that has been soaking in over a number of years which we’re all guilty of exasperating anyway.

Not that I love it any less…

Festive wishes!

A confused man…

Its amazing how little I seem to understand at this point. As I sit the walls move and the keys run away from my fingers. For some reason, the letter Q seems exceptionally far away.

Alarmingly large chunks of last nights proceedings evade me. Writing now, I am a bizarre combination of pure inspiration and complete confusion. I have an unbridled desire to slam thoughts into paper, yet making sense of the mish-mash going on in my head is proving to be a stumbling block. Retro synths reverberate around my brain as my confusion develops, furthermore the soft pitter-patter of rain on my window only exacerbates the nonsensical fug in which my mind currently resides.

The music has changed, now its some random techno track and I hate it. Its weird, as I sit here the clarity of my thoughts struggles to prevail. A fuzzy burden upon my mind, seemingly shrugged off in one instance, only to find its presence well and truly grounded in the next.

Transcribing such oddities as they occur only continues to confuse and confound my brittle mind, what is it I’m writing?

Light some candles, roll something then read or write…

Picture the scene, a Sunday evening in October and you’re contentedly tapping meaningless digits into a calculator because you have a finance deadline the next day. Obviously you’ve left it until last minute because without that added pressure of absolutely having to get it done you wouldn’t be doing it. So there you are and what should possibly happen? Power cut. Oh yes, excellent.

Okay, clearly by “you” I do actually mean “I” and once again I’ve left it until last minute…nothing new there then.

Now such an occurrence wouldn’t actually have been that particularly bad if say…..we lived in the 1600’s.  Instead no, we happen to live in the 21st century and thanks to numerous and varied scientific discoveries we’ve become horrendously reliant on one such little discovery, most capitalised on by a chap called Thomas Edison when he invented the world’s first incandescent light bulb.

Electricity, oh that’s the one. The magical force that makes the vast majority of the modern world tick…and without it we’d be akin to a fat kid on a rope swing; hopeless.

On the odd occasion that our nation’s facilities do cut out and subsequently fail to provide sufficient service to we the citizens then you’ll find yourself making a startling discovery…there’s not much to do when the powers out!
Constantly I find myself wandering into rooms, habitually flicking light switches that don’t work before cursing their current lack of function, flicking the switch on the kettle; cursing its lack of function, trying to log onto Facebook, cursing its lack of function and thinking oh I’ll just watch TV…before cursing its lack of function! You get the picture.

So it seems, at 2am in the morning with very little to do there isn’t much choice in the way of solution other than to light some candles, roll something tasty then sit and read or write in the serenity of a world disconnected from civilisation…albeit if only temporarily.

…ok, so I’m resuming writing this the following morning because my laptop died midway through writing last night. Oh yeah by the way, we’ve just had another power cut. Which basically means it currently sounds like some sort of alien invasion outside again…that is if said invading aliens sounded like an army of shrill burglar alarms all repeatedly shrieking their same whiney battle cry over and over and over again. Perhaps I could be exaggerating, but its not half bloody distracting!

22. A Nowhere Birthday?

Twenty-two is a funny age isn’t it…nothing particularly special really. Perhaps even considered just to be a trivial milestone in the perpetual trudge that is life?

I disagree, it may be a trivial milestone but life is not a perpetual trudge, this has been one of my best birthdays. :)

Intermittent weather causes canine displeasure…

We’ve just moved into our new five bed house and, as its sole inhabitant for the time being i have been awarded a most entertaining task. Dog sitting.

The Pooch in question is a Russel the Pomeranian puppy.

At about four months old he incessantly barks at Gingers and habitually victimises pieces of fluff on the carpet. He really is quite the character and this crazy weather we're having only makes him more so.

These torrential downpours we've had over the past few days are a nightmare for walking a dog this size...especially considering that he seems to interpret rain as molten hot droplets of fire cascading down from the heavens, as if i were forcing him to endure some sort of puppy-pocalypse.

Standard procedure tends to consist of him completely stopping at the slightest flicker of precipitation before cowering behind the nearest wall, tree, lampost, human, pebble....etc.

Naturally, after a couple of tugs on his lead to no avail, I pick him up as his outrageously cute whimpers shatter my previously solid resolve, wrap him in my jacket all warm and cosey and proceed to chauffeur the adorable little blighter all the way home.

1-0 Russel, damn it.

Bath tip…

Did you know you can drown in as little as 2 inches of water? Next time you’re in the bath…avoid encountering such a dilemma and Sellotape all the empty shampoo and shower gel bottles to your limbs for use as makeshift buoyancy aids…beat that Blue Peter.

Facebook: More than just an elaborate tool of the habitual procrastinator?

Unlike Myspace, which essentially went out of fashion, after suffering a major decline in its popularity, I have a feeling Facebook is here for the long run. It’s showing all the signs of longevity. Its simplistic, easy to use interface appeals to all ages offering various security options and a cost free user experience. It’s clear to see why Mark’s little brainwave is so massively popular worldwide.

Now, consider the photographs aspect Facebook offers. Think how many photos of yourself you currently have on your profile and more to the point how frequently more are added. Pictures of everything from friends, family and pets, to nights out, holidays and major events in your life, they are all uploaded for the viewing pleasure of those whom you deem worthy of your cyber companionship.

So! Combining its vast potential for a considerable lifespan with the continual addition of photographs…fifteen years on and you still have a Facebook page, yet now you have a detailed photographic record of the past decade and a half of your life. Being able to look back through your photographs watching yourself grow up before your very own eyes in such detail is nothing to be sniffed at. Visibly making the transition through life from education to work to getting on the property ladder with your partner, it is quite probably all going to be here. Never before has such an intimate thing been so readily accessible to so many.

Right! Lets take it to the next level, lets make it fifty years down the line and you have grand children who have Facebook.

Little do you realise but this has been developing into quite a considerable phenomenon, creating over many years what is essentially becoming a hugely detailed, online collection of photographic family trees viewable by all those who reside within your social network.

…thus meaning your innocent minded great grandkids are now going to be able to look back through your photos and see you lying passed out on the doorstep of your student house thanks to a few too many Jaeger bombs on a Saturday night.

Brilliant.

Bleak Morning Chill….

If you’re one of these people who has to get up early in the mornings for whatever reason it may be, then you certainly know how cold it is; your alarm goes off and you’re cast unpleasantly, semi-naked (as the case often is) into the bleak chill of everything your loyal duvet is not at that very point in time.
Even the sun’s sporadic golden rays, poking through the partially-drawn blinds, fail to offer much in the way of thermal respite.

A simple solution to this dilemma perhaps….before bed, choose whatever clothes you wish to wear at the start the next day. Perhaps trackies or a pull on hoody…and of all ideas, take them to bed with you then, keeping them under the covers while you rest your weary head.

Come morning you wake, rubbing sleep from your squinting eyes.  Now concentrate because the next part is crucial…before you make that torturously chilly walk to the shower, do yourself a favour and pull on the delightfully toasty clothes you’ve kept warm all night in your fantastically cosey bed.

Finally…casually stroll to the shower basking in your warmth and laugh heartily in the face of that devilish morning chill, knowing full well you’ve succeeded in defeating one of the perils a suitably nippy morning has to throw at you.

Smile, its going to be a nice day.
